Storyboard first attempt

THIS IS THE PLANNED LAYOUT FOR MY FINAL STORYBOARD

Reflection: The drawing does look messy, I do need to change my drawing style to make it more neat. In the end I got my storyboard planned out to get the flow. I need to as well ad more shots as well in the ending there is going to be the quote "Feel alive with whatsapp" that overlaps the guy in the coffin.

  • In the first shot as well i need to add a medium shot of the priest.
  • Secondly, there needs to show a feeling of boredom since the priest is talking to much thus i need to add more sleepy yawning emotion mixed with the emotional emotion as well.
  • Third, at the 7th frame with the long shot of everybody i need to add another shot of people compiled with emotions then i will continue whipping specifically to each other's emotion with whip pans
  • When the whipping montage starts theres also a non-diegestic sound playing in the background
  • For the 11th frame where it whips from the two guys to the dark surrounding guy , before the 12th frame I will add a POV shot of the guy getting his phone then once he opens whatsapp then it wil lcut to the 12th frame with the bright light shining in his face.

Advertisement proposal

The advertisement making is for Whatsapp ( communication application). My target audience is for both females and males at all ages or people who are able to have a phone. The flow of the advertisement is going to be like : firstly, there will be a static long shot of a funeral ( part where people say goodbye to the person in the coffin ) using emotional soundtracks . Next will be a medium shot of a character being emotional crying about the death, but suddenly a notification popped out from their phone with a "ding!" sound. Then the notification sound crecendo from people checking their phones from whatsapp. Then there will be a montage of different characters having different emotions some laughing some calling and some being angry, basically in their own world. FInally it will cut to a scene in the coffin where there can also be heard a ding! sound where the person inside will also be checking the message and laughing around, in the end everybody is in their own business. Ending will be a quote from  whatsapp's tagline "Simple. Secure. Reliable Messaging"

After talking with mr Nick

Reflection: Maybe because my advertisement is about a funeral, I should lean my target audience towards old people. Also changing the tagline to "Feel alive with whatsapp"

USP: its simple and easy to use as my commercial shows that everyone is using it.

Storyboad practice

My practice storyboard based on my mini project

Self reflection: I am not really that talented in drawing thus I mostly need to rely on my explanation, the storyboard wasn't that complicated or life challenging to make since the video was created by me and my friend making it easier to explain or derive meaning from the videos. I still have difficulties on how to draw certain camera shots and what to put in the explanation beside. Eventhough my drawing was trash, I still find it fun .

Text Analysis : A Quiet Place

THIS IS MY VIDEO ANYLISIS FOR A QUIET PLACE

This text is from an extract called A Quiet Place, the film maker wanted to show that the place is abandoned, leftout with no inhabitants other than the characters that are shown on screen.

In the beginning of the scene, the director wanted to show that the characters were the only ones in the setting, elements of mis-en-scene applying props such as leaves on roads and thrashed trash all over reveals that the area hasn't been taken care of , accompanied with the high angle and long shots gives a sense of loneliness to the audience as the camera shows a wide shot of the area. Diegetic sounds such as the sound of winds flowing around the beginning scenes as the camera pans through buildings, shows how solitary the area is as the audience can even hear the sounds of wind even though it looks like it is set in a town. As well the next scene is set inside a supermarket, with the same idea as the director tries to make it look abandoned. Mis-en-scene such as dirty shelves and messy arrangement of store items indicates that nobody is there to look after the place, as a matter of course the director uses long shots to simulate that the characters were the only one there, it also enlarges the surrounding, dark shelves to build up more tension. Lighting used is mostly from the sun, thus it sets inside the supermarket to be dark, as seen that camera shots shown has a dark element to build up suspense. Overall it gives a jittery and mysterious feeling to the audience.

REFLECTION: As mr nick has commented, i needed more further analysis on the camera shots and movement to describe the mis-en-scene. I also need to add more meaning on the points I have mentioned. While these are still my early attemps on doing this, I think I can improve a lot more

Mini project

This is my mini project video for the first project in media studies.

Mini project video

Members: Bagas and Bagus

Extreme long shot/static:

This long shot is used to show the subjects loneliness in the midst of a mess, emphasising the feeling of further isolation, increases the gloomy vibe.e

Over the shoulder/boom:

Emphasises more on what the subject is currently doing, the slow boom creates the effect of interest and suspense, what is the subject reading.

Medium/static:

Focuses on the subject's expression, how he focuses on finishing the chapters of the book in a rush, the look of uneasiness on his face.

Long shot/static:

Focuses back on the loneliness of the subject, as the viewers somewhat have a feeling and the vibe of what is happening.

Extreme long shot/Static:

Once again, another extreme long shot to further suggest the loneliness of the subject.

Long shot/static (clock):

Emphasises that time is ticking and eventually everything would be owned by time.

Medium/over the shoulder/static:

This is used to zap the viewer's attention back to the book.

Medium Shot:

To bring back the viewers attention to the subjects emotions and expressions, the second medium shot is used to create an effect of mystriousness and uneasiness once more to the viewers.

High angle/static:

Straightforward, focuses back on the book, but this time, emphasizing the closing of the book. Which indicates the ending of a chapter.

Medium shot/static:

Showing the subjects true emotions and the contemplation, to clarify truly the subjects uneasiness.

Extreme long shot/static:

To show the characters packing his bags to show that he is,”packing up the essentials” The messy room in frame shows the things he will leave behind what he can’t pick up with him anymore.

Tracking/medium shot:

This short duration of a frame also kind of e=shows the characters emotion as he is bowing down, showing signs of further contemplation.

Long shot/ static:

The most important shot of the video, shows the subject walking slowly to the door. Opens the door but looks forward, indicating that he is looking into a,”new chapter”, but looks back again to once again think about the past. After the light cuts off, the smack of the door indicates, “the closing of the chapter”

The true meaning of this project is showing how we experience a lot of things and make different memories (the messy room), the closing of the book indicates the closing of the chapter while the constant contemplation is depicted by the subject looking back into the room and looking forward. The closed doors means that a chapter is closed. Not to be touched once more.

We chose static shots to emphasize the uneasiness and gloominess. That it is calm. The song, “No Surprises” by the band Radiohead adds the sad and gloomy vibe.

Reflection: I was quite pressured by the time limit given by mr Nick to complete this mini project which is within the session. The idea of this project was to display Bagus siting by himself in the classroom, trying to develop a lonely atmosphere. The camera shots used were mostly long shots, this is because we wanted to display the lone figure he is in the middle of the scene. At first I thought this was going to be stable but looking back at the shots the camera was very shaky. Thus I used capcut's feature which is to stabalize the scenes. The result wasn't that satisfying, but It was better. To decide on the color grading I searched up some videos on depressing videos to get the overall colors which are mostly grey and black.

Title of the Advertisement:

1. Target Audience

  • People above the age of 18 or around 30s mostly the male gender, as well as people that can drive

2. Message and Purpose

With the insurance you can live peacefully and enjoy life

3. Meaning and Interpretation

With using the product the advertisement shows an image of a guy looking cool while not caring about anything else or around him, being comfortable and enjoying life since the insurance can cover him ensuring his safety.

4. Effectiveness

The advert did captured my attention because I also thought that the guy looked cool thus the advert succesfully portrayed the guy being badass, furtheromore adding celebrities like snoop dogg, being very popular for his songs helps increase the attractiveness of the ad since many people would recognise him.

5. Personal Response

The advertisment was very interseting since it didn't really demonstrate what the product was or what does it do so it did piqued my curiosty which would force me to visit their website to identify what is the product about

6. Comparative Analysis (Optional)

If relevant, compare the advertisement with other ads from the same brand or competitors.

Discuss how this advertisement stands out or differs from others in the same category.

4. Effectiveness

Its very affective as i find it funny eventhough it doesnt have anything related to chocolate it still has the key elements of the chocolate brand which is the color purple, it uses the song from phil colins which can also increase the ad's recognition for featuring the song
5. Personal Response

The advert was funny, it was random but it got my eye's attention though it was completely out of context and off topic with the gorrilla playing the drums was random.

6. Comparative Analysis (Optional)

If relevant, compare the advertisement with other ads from the same brand or competitors.

5. Personal Response

The advert was definitely interesting to watch its fun to watch lots of things happening such as dances and showcasing products quickly in a fast pace motion i think its perfect for children as there isnt alot of text and just mostly action

6. Comparative Analysis (Optional)

If relevant, compare the advertisement with other ads from the same brand or competitors.

Title of the Advertisement:Super Bowl 50: Doritos Ad

Duration of the Advertisement: 30 seconds

Brief Overview/Summary: Dad eating doritos while his wife is giving birth to a child

1. Target Audience

All ages and all genders, people who enjoys eating chips.

2. Message and Purpose

It can be shown that anybody and at any age can enjoy doritos by showing how the baby starts to move around as the dad holds the chip and starts swaying around the mother's womb, seen from the ultra sound and when the mother throws the dorito the baby was very desperate as it instantly jumps out the mothers womb to fetch that dorito.

3. Meaning and Interpretation

The advert doesnt mention what is dorito or what is it for, its just a comedic skit that's aiming to make consumers laugh and spread the image of doritos having funny, random commercials.

4. Effectiveness

It does succesfully capture the consumers attention, via funny commercials and random ideas for humor without any specific meaning. With everytime someone eats a dorito something magical or chaotic things happening here and there, its their iconic way of showing their product.

5. Personal Response

The ad was funny, there are lots of other dorito commercials that are funny and now I have know that doritos has one of the most brilliant ideas on catching people's attention.

6. Comparative Analysis (Optional)

If relevant, compare the advertisement with other ads from the same brand or competitors.

Discuss how this advertisement stands out or differs from others in the same category.

Title of the Advertisement:Crossroads | KFC Funny Commercial

Brand/Product: KFC

Duration of the Advertisement: 1 minute

Brief Overview/Summary: Chicken faces off against turkey

1. Target Audience

Identify the intended audience for the advertisement. Consider factors such as age group, gender, interests, and social/cultural background.

All ages and all genders , maybe for people who enjoys eating chicken the commercial is in the UK but doesnt specifically differentiate who would love to enjoy KFC

2. Message and Purpose

Analyze the central message or theme conveyed by the advertisement.

Discuss the purpose of the advertisement and what the brand/product aims to achieve through it.

The advert was out on christmas day where in the UK people would have turkey to celebrate its also the day ( 25th of december) where KFC closes down in the UK stated by the marketing director that turkey is given a chance to take the spotlight for the family feast instead of their famous chicken. Hence shows a chicken roaming through tough terrains and snowy conditions going on an adventure to face off the turkey. Head to head with the turkey, the turkey revelas its wings to show dominance though the chicken has always been the alpha and looking more menacing, the turkey runs away and the chicken starts to wonder again. In the end of the commercial there is a quote that says "turkeys comes and goes" meaning turkey isnt always the main source of food or isnt regulary eaten "but the chicken is here to stay" shows how chicken is "always there" when people want to eat. It implies that eventhough turkey is demanded that specific day, KFC will always be there and the other days of the year.

3. Meaning and Interpretation

Examine the visual and verbal elements of the advertisement.

Interpret the symbolic meaning and subtext that may exist in the ad's imagery and language.

The idea of this ad is to show that the chicken goes on a journey to do a standoff with the turkey. KFC tries to make the scenses dramatic and adventuruous by using angles such as an extremely long angle to show the amount of steps the chicken has taken and how long will that journey be, making the chicken look lonely but determined to accomplish something. In the main scene, the standoff, medium shots were used to create tension in the standoff and as it progresses the camera goes closer to their eyes with close shots to show how they're staring against each other. Thus the turkey lost the standoff and scrambles away leaving the chicken winning the standoff walking out of the area with a cowboy shot to make it heroic as well as making the chicken look more dominant after winning the standoff.

4. Effectiveness

Evaluate the effectiveness of the advertisement in capturing the attention of the target audience.

Discuss the persuasive techniques used, such as emotional appeal, humor, celebrity endorsement, etc.

Eventhough it doesn't apply to all countries, it does catch the attention of the audience with a cinematic drama of a chicken wondering through wintry climate to go against a turkey, especially with the famous soundtrack  from Ennio Morricone’s classic Western “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.” which makes the scenes more recognisable and glorious, most parts of the advert was also inspired from the movie mainly on the cowboy shots, its as if the chicken and the rooster was in the wild west.

5. Personal Response

Share your personal opinion and reaction to the advertisement.

Reflect on how the advertisement made you feel and whether it resonates with you.

The advertisement was fun to watch an interesting idea for KFC to make these types of advertisements. It made me rooting for the chicken to wind the standoff, the chicken's journey was very fun to watch as well as seeing the chicken go through obstacles and keep on walking.

6. Comparative Analysis (Optional)

If relevant, compare the advertisement with other ads from the same brand or competitors.

Discuss how this advertisement stands out or differs from others in the same category.

Self reflection: This kind of reminded me from the writer's effect questions at FLE grade 10. Most of the identification I had done needed more further analysis, as when I did this I didn't really knew how to apply media language to most of my answers. Thus next time I need to add more meaning and explanation as well as apply more media language to potentially get more points.

These are advertisements that help me get the idea for my storyboard.
