Title of the Advertisement:Crossroads | KFC Funny Commercial
Brand/Product: KFC
Duration of the Advertisement: 1 minute
Brief Overview/Summary: Chicken faces off against turkey
1. Target Audience
Identify the intended audience for the advertisement. Consider factors such as age group, gender, interests, and social/cultural background.
All ages and all genders , maybe for people who enjoys eating chicken the commercial is in the UK but doesnt specifically differentiate who would love to enjoy KFC
2. Message and Purpose
Analyze the central message or theme conveyed by the advertisement.
Discuss the purpose of the advertisement and what the brand/product aims to achieve through it.
The advert was out on christmas day where in the UK people would have turkey to celebrate its also the day ( 25th of december) where KFC closes down in the UK stated by the marketing director that turkey is given a chance to take the spotlight for the family feast instead of their famous chicken. Hence shows a chicken roaming through tough terrains and snowy conditions going on an adventure to face off the turkey. Head to head with the turkey, the turkey revelas its wings to show dominance though the chicken has always been the alpha and looking more menacing, the turkey runs away and the chicken starts to wonder again. In the end of the commercial there is a quote that says "turkeys comes and goes" meaning turkey isnt always the main source of food or isnt regulary eaten "but the chicken is here to stay" shows how chicken is "always there" when people want to eat. It implies that eventhough turkey is demanded that specific day, KFC will always be there and the other days of the year.
3. Meaning and Interpretation
Examine the visual and verbal elements of the advertisement.
Interpret the symbolic meaning and subtext that may exist in the ad's imagery and language.
The idea of this ad is to show that the chicken goes on a journey to do a standoff with the turkey. KFC tries to make the scenses dramatic and adventuruous by using angles such as an extremely long angle to show the amount of steps the chicken has taken and how long will that journey be, making the chicken look lonely but determined to accomplish something. In the main scene, the standoff, medium shots were used to create tension in the standoff and as it progresses the camera goes closer to their eyes with close shots to show how they're staring against each other. Thus the turkey lost the standoff and scrambles away leaving the chicken winning the standoff walking out of the area with a cowboy shot to make it heroic as well as making the chicken look more dominant after winning the standoff.
4. Effectiveness
Evaluate the effectiveness of the advertisement in capturing the attention of the target audience.
Discuss the persuasive techniques used, such as emotional appeal, humor, celebrity endorsement, etc.
Eventhough it doesn't apply to all countries, it does catch the attention of the audience with a cinematic drama of a chicken wondering through wintry climate to go against a turkey, especially with the famous soundtrack from Ennio Morricone’s classic Western “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.” which makes the scenes more recognisable and glorious, most parts of the advert was also inspired from the movie mainly on the cowboy shots, its as if the chicken and the rooster was in the wild west.
5. Personal Response
Share your personal opinion and reaction to the advertisement.
Reflect on how the advertisement made you feel and whether it resonates with you.
The advertisement was fun to watch an interesting idea for KFC to make these types of advertisements. It made me rooting for the chicken to wind the standoff, the chicken's journey was very fun to watch as well as seeing the chicken go through obstacles and keep on walking.
6. Comparative Analysis (Optional)
If relevant, compare the advertisement with other ads from the same brand or competitors.
Discuss how this advertisement stands out or differs from others in the same category.
Self reflection: This kind of reminded me from the writer's effect questions at FLE grade 10. Most of the identification I had done needed more further analysis, as when I did this I didn't really knew how to apply media language to most of my answers. Thus next time I need to add more meaning and explanation as well as apply more media language to potentially get more points.
These are advertisements that help me get the idea for my storyboard.
